If you’re anything like me then your computer is not so much a useful tool as it is a necessary part of your life.

A computer allows us to do huge amounts of otherwise complex work in small amounts of time.

So when your computer starts to malfunction, life suddenly seems that much harder.

Here are some of the more common such malfunctions and what you can do about them -

When  Your Computer Hangs

If your computer  suddenly becomes unresponsive in the middle of a task then it will be safe to assume that it has become hanged.

At this point you need to press Ctrl+ Alt + Del at the same time.

This will cause the Task manager box to appear.

From the list of tasks that are displayed you need to find the one (or more) that shows ‘not responding’.

Right click on each of these and select ‘End Task’.

Repeat this process until all of the tasks have been ended.

If this doesn’t fix the problem then simply reboot your computer as minor issues can be fixed this way, though you will likely lose any unsaved work.

When you reboot your computer all the memory registers are cleared and all running programs are reset.

When Your Computer Simply Doesn’t Work

If your computer won’t even start then do not despair.

If a light appears on your monitor (usually green or blue) then your monitor is OK, but there is likely a problem with the connection to your graphics card, or a power issue.

Check that all of your connections are as they should be and that all power cables are plugged in and switched on at the mains.

If, on the other hand,  your monitor’s light does not come on but your computer’s does, then the issue lies with your screen.

The best way to check if your monitor is faulty is to borrow another one from a friend or family member.

If you don’t have an extra monitor, then check the connections again, especially the connection between CPU and monitor.

Your Keyboard Does Not Work

If your keyboard does not work then pressing Ctrl+ Alt+ Del as detailed above.

if your computer has become hanged then this process may resolve the problem.

If the keyboard still doesn’t  work then check the connection with your PC.

If your keyboard has a USB connection then sometimes removing this then putting it back in cures the problem.

Some viruses also create this type of problem.

Therefore it pays to always have one of the top 10 antivirus programs installed.
